“I have here a highly sought after set of six solid English oak napkin rings from the ‘Mouseman’ workshop in Kilburn, North Yorkshire.

Each ring is hand-carved in oak in the traditional faceted style and each features the distinctive carved mouse.

The mice in this complete matching set are crisply carved and consistent and show the warm colour and natural grain of the oak that ‘Mouseman’ pieces are rightly famous for.”

Robert Thompson (1876–1955), widely known as “Mouseman of Kilburn,” was an English furniture maker and woodcarver whose workshop in Kilburn, North Yorkshire, became one of Britain’s most recognisable craft studios of the twentieth century.

Thompson established his workshop in the early twentieth century and developed a distinctive style of handcrafted oak furniture inspired by traditional English craftsmanship and the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement. His pieces were made using solid English oak and traditional construction methods, often featuring adzed surfaces and simple, robust forms designed for longevity.

The most recognisable feature of Thompson’s work is the small hand-carved mouse that appears on nearly every piece produced by the workshop. According to workshop tradition, the mouse motif originated during the 1920s when craftsmen joked about being “as poor as church mice,” leading Thompson to carve a mouse as a playful signature. The carved mouse soon became the workshop’s identifying mark and remains one of the most distinctive signatures in British furniture making.

Robert Thompson’s workshop continues to operate in Kilburn, North Yorkshire, producing furniture and wooden objects using many of the same tools and techniques established during his lifetime.
