John Bellany (1942–2013) was a major Scottish painter known for bold, expressive, often autobiographical work rooted in the fishing communities of his hometown, Port Seton, near Edinburgh. After studying at Edinburgh College of Art in the 1960s, he became associated with a generation of post‑war Scottish artists who renewed figurative painting with intense colour and symbolism. His art frequently draws on maritime life, religion, myth, and personal experience, including a highly productive period after a life‑saving heart transplant in 1988. Bellany exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, and his works are held in major public collections, including the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate.
