John Forgan is a contemporary Scottish artist known for vibrant and atmospheric paintings created primarily in watercolour, mixed media, and charcoal. Born and raised in Linlithgow near Edinburgh, his work is strongly rooted in the landscapes, towns, and coastal environments of central and eastern Scotland.
Working in watercolour for many years, Forgan has continually explored techniques that introduce depth, freedom, and expressive use of colour, giving his paintings a distinctive individuality. He frequently employs mixed media processes to build texture and layered surfaces, moving beyond traditional flat watercolour to capture the character and structure of Scottish architecture and landscape.
Much of Forgan’s inspiration comes from the fishing villages and harbours that line Scotland’s coastline, subjects through which he explores atmosphere, light, and changing weather. Urban scenes also form an important part of his work, particularly views of Edinburgh, where landmarks such as the Grassmarket, Edinburgh Castle, and George Heriot’s School appear as recurring motifs.
Today, John Forgan’s paintings are appreciated for their strong sense of place, expressive colour, and accessible interpretation of Scotland’s urban and coastal identity, appealing to collectors seeking contemporary Scottish landscape painting with individuality and warmth.
