“This is a really striking large-scale monoprint by Dale Devereux Barker, known for his colourful and playful approach to printmaking.
What I like about this one is the balance — it’s made up of individual blocks, each with its own pattern or texture, but it all pulls together into something really bold and modern. It almost feels like a mix between abstract art and textile design.
Unlike his more common edition prints, this is a one-off monoprint, which gives it a bit more presence and individuality.
It’s a great size and works brilliantly as a statement piece — particularly in a modern interior where you want something with colour and structure without it being too heavy.”
Dale Devereux Barker is a British printmaker, painter and enameller, born in Leicester in 1962. He studied at Loughborough College of Art and Design, Leicester Polytechnic, and the Slade School of Fine Art between 1980 and 1986.
He is best known for his colourful linocuts, often depicting everyday domestic scenes with a distinctive mix of humour, pattern and narrative. His work typically features interiors, figures, and still life elements, brought together through bold colour and strong line.
He works across a range of media including linocut, screenprint, painting and enamel, although printmaking—particularly reduction linocut—forms the core of his practice.
In 1996 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE), a significant professional distinction in British printmaking.
He lives and works in Suffolk, where he has also taught printmaking. His work has been widely exhibited in the UK and internationally, including at the Royal Academy of Arts, and is held in public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Ashmolean Museum.
